Salinas City Councilman Steve McShane
Steve McShane serves Salinas as City Councilman for the Third District encompassing South Salinas including Salinas City Center, and the industrial complexes south of the city. Steve holds a degree in Soil Science from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and a Masters in Agribusiness Administration from Santa Clara University. In 2005, he opened McShane’s Nursery & Landscape Supply. Steve previously served as chair of the Salinas Planning Commission and Vice Chair of both the city’s Design Review Board and Traffic and Transportation Commission. Steve is a strong advocate for public safety, neighborhoods & lean government. Steve represents the City of Salinas to the Monterey Bay Air Pollution Control District. He also sits on the Oldtown Salinas Association Board and the Board for the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments. Most recently, McShane has invested in an organic fertilizer company named Converted Organics, with local farmer and businessman, David Gill.
Just back from a council visit to Turkey, Steve came in to talk to WGCIT startups about entrepreneurship in Salinas, the Clean Tech Open accelerator he has been participating in, and government programs that he knows of that support startups in Salinas. He touched on Federal, State, and local programs that the startups should investigate for support and business resources. He also alluded to the inter-connected nature of the grower community in the Salinas Valley. This event was attended by resident startups Food Origins, HeavyConnect, Inteligistics, iFood Decision Sciences, and California Safe Soil. “Politics makes for strange bedfellows.”
